"Dishonest" Voices
Auto-Tune contributed to the rise of many new acts in music. A whole crop of new hip-hop artists like Future, Soulja Boy, Chief Keef, Young Thug, and French Montana all became more popular through their own takes on Auto-Tune (Kramer). However, Auto-Tune was not exclusive to hip-hop, as by the 2010’s it had become a major deal in the pop world. Rather than noticeably manipulating the sound of someone’s voice, Auto-Tune had been used as originally intended, to correct a vocalist’s pitch in a non-obvious manner. This had been going on for years, but audiences really only became clued in on the phenomenon around the rise of artists like Michael Bublé, especially on songs like 2009’s “Haven’t Met You Yet”. People began to take issue with this, arguing that imperfection was part of the art, “Where it [Auto-Tune] sounds most inappropriate is with someone such as Michael Bublé. Sinatra used to sing slightly flat all the time, and so did Sade – that's what gave her that melancholic sound” (Lindvall). Artists who did not use Auto-Tune became praised for being “honest”, whether or not that was actually true.
