Rap's Embrace
Auto-Tune would also hit an important milestone with its unexpected appearance on Snoop Dogg’s “Sexual Eruption”. Snoop’s usage of the software is significant, since he had been, and still is, largely known for spoken rap and is not usually melodic with his delivery. This usage really helped boost Auto-Tune’s reputation, essentially being given a stamp of approval by one of the most famous rappers of all time. The song, “…reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and, sent a message that Auto-Tune wasn't just T-Pain's thing. [Audio engineer Seth Firkins] called it ‘a watershed moment for Auto-Tune,’ explaining that suddenly everyone finally felt like they could use it without being considered a biter ‘because Uncle Snoop did it’” (Kramer). As time went on, more rappers would learn to make use of Auto-Tune in ways that provided a different sound from normal rap. As Simon Reynolds writes, “something about the sound of Auto-Tune melted these rappers’ hard hearts and opened up the possibility for tenderness and vulnerability” (Reynolds). The software really began to take hold of the hip-hop genre by allowing for artists to capture a new kind of voice, legitimizing it more as an artistic tool in that area of music.
